Description

Abstract

Spectroscopic techniques in the soft X-ray regime can provide information about aqueous solutions that is hard to come by with other techniques. A thin window covering a flow cell can for example be used with resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) or a liquid jet with differential pumping in the case of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). It may sound technically challenging to combine liquids and vacuum and sometimes is, so why should one bother? This presentation will try to answer that and include some results from MAX-lab on the topic of aqueous surfaces of atmospherically relevant model systems, Langmuir-like adsorption and ion pairing with possible implications for biochemistry along with some ideas for future sample environments at Veritas and Species RIXS.
