Description

The aim of this ForMAX workshop is to explore the match and the mismatch between some of the key scientific questions within the forest/paper/pulp materials research field and the current design of the MAX IV beamlines and endstations and how they could be used as important tools in this research field. Through this process some key demonstration projects can be identified and the design and specifications of the ForMAX beamline and endstations can begin to take shape.

ForMAX is a beamline project and a portal to existing beamlines at MAX IV for research on forest based materials and production processes of such materials. The project has a strong industry foundation with the aim of being largely funded by industry.

The ForMAX project has received funding for a pre-study to define the ForMAX beamline and develop two sample environments. this is a joint project between MAX IV, Chalmers and KTH. The aim of the project is also to secure the complete funding for the ForMAX beamline and its operation.

The outcome of this workshop should be:

- To identify 4 to 6 key scientific challenges within the field that could significantly benefit from the use of synchrotron radiation based techniques.

- Initiate the process of expanding these key scientific challenges with descriptions and references, proposing important experiments, need for analytical tools (Synchrotron based and non-synchrotron based), and need for sample environments.

- From the discussions be able to narrow down the most important synchrotron radiation techniques and sample environments for this field of research.
