When: 9 - 10 January 2025
Where: Fernströmsalen @BioMedicalCentre, Sölvegatan 19, Lund, Sweden
Why:
- Increasingly, complex and heterogeneous samples are finding their way to the synchrotron. One technique is often not sufficient, yet tackling several, unfamiliar methods over a longer time period can be unattractive and intimidating to most (novel) users.
- A wider portfolio of (spectral) microscopy techniques and complementary techniques can be offered if pathways are available to guide the user and help can be offered to navigate the way.
- Beamline scientists & synchrotron staff have a crucial role in advising on these multimodal & multispectral approaches and identifying bottlenecks (e.g. sample preparation, data handling & analysis, interpretation). They can then also be of help to streamline the experience.
- We want to explore if and how a more connected network across facilities and involving offline labs can improve user success.
How: The workshop will gather ideas within the context of multimodal and multispectral microscopy performed at or connected to European synchrotrons. It will focus primarily on the involvement of facility staff, who are directly working with enabling this for the users. Besides presentations, we will create discussion sessions around focused topics. To hone the discussion topics, please help us by filling out the Questionnaire, available at the bottom of the page (and attach it to your registration). A couple of discussion areas can be foreseen:
- Inventory & experiences – what is currently available in instruments/facilities/techniques, auxiliary & offline labs, other connected institutes for support? What works/doesn't work?
- Sample handling & preparation – what support is available, gather what methods/chemicals work for which technique/which order to perform experiments, storage & shipping. What is sustainable to offer to the user, and what is to be done at the user's home lab?
- Data – different formats, storage & downloading: how about compatibility? Analysis software and tutorials, reference databases, and automatization - what is needed?
- Involving other EU programs - staff exchange visits, multi-facility access programs like Re:made, Rianna etc., and facilitating institutes like LINXS, or e.g. Eurobioimaging - does this cover the range?
How much? The workshop is sponsored by LEAPS-INNOV and can thus be offered Free of Charge. It includes lunches/coffee breaks during the workshop and both the welcome/informal dinner mentioned in the programme.
