Alarm handling. Selection and configuration of alarms based on operational modes. Alarm acknowledgment policy. MAX III

      MAX III

      MAX IV

      ·         What does this group consider to be “best practises” regarding alarm handling for a large scale research facility? How is this different from alarm handling in a water processing plant? How about a nuclear power plant?

      ·         Describe a case where alarm handling has allowed the team to capture and resolve a problem before it escalated. What was the critical factors that allowed the rapid response? What can we learn from this experience?

      ·         Describe a few common pitfalls when to comes to alarm handling and alarm configuration, in particular in regards to different operational modes. How can we avoid these specific pitfalls?

    • 9:00 AM 12:00 PM
Data archiving. Selection criterion and data retention policies for control systems. Brahe (ESS)

      Brahe

      ESS

      · What does this group consider to be “best practises” regarding selection of data for archiving for control systems (we are not considering experiment data for this exercise)? What about data retention policy?

      · For each facility (MAX IV and ESS) discuss and recommend at least two actions to improve the handling of archived data, data retention and performance/stability of archiver backend.· Describe a scenario where incorrect or suboptimal handling of archiver data selection and retention can cause loss of beam time. How is the loss of beam time caused? What can we do to reduce the risk for loss of beam time? If beam time is lost despite our best effort how do we recover quickly?

    • 9:00 AM 12:00 PM
Deployment and monitoring of control systems Tycho (ESS)

      Tycho

      ESS

      ·         What would an “ideal” deployment and monitoring system do for us? What are the three most important characteristics/features?

      ·         Describe a scenario where comprehensive monitoring of control system can prevent loss of beam time. What are the capabilities that allows us to keep the machine running when it would otherwise have stopped?

      ·         What does this group consider to be “industry best practises” regarding deployment of controls systems? What about monitoring?

Collaboration with operators and scientific users MAX III

      MAX III

      MAX IV

      ·         Describe a few cases where you have experienced excellent collaboration with users. What made these collaborations work so well? Now reflect on some cases where there were challenges in the collaboration? What was the cause for these challenges? How did you address them? Did it work?

      ·         Consider a scenario where we can foresee a difficult collaboration for an experiment. What are the factors that are likely to create problems? Recommend at least three actions that can be taken to avoid the problems.

      ·         What does this group consider to be “best practises” regarding establishing and maintaining good collaboration with users?

    • 1:00 PM 4:00 PM
Onboarding, knowledge sharing and knowledge retention in a control systems team Brahe (ESS)

      Brahe

      ESS

      ·         How would an “ideal” onboarding of a new colleague look like? What are the benefits to the new colleague? And to your organization?

      ·         Describe a few ways of sharing knowledge that works well. Why do they work? Now give a few examples of ways of sharing knowledge that works less well? What are the challenges for the methods?

      ·         What does this group consider to be “industry best practises” regarding retaining knowledge in a control team? And if crucial knowledge and know-how is lost despite our best efforts, what is the best contingencies to reduce the impact?

    • 1:00 PM 4:00 PM
Test and test automation for control systems Tycho (ESS)

      Tycho

      ESS

      ·         What does this group consider to be “best practises” regarding re-testing of a commissioned control system that has been updated?

      ·         Describe a scenario where test automation can be meaningfully applied to a control system? What are the factors that makes this system suitable for test automation?

      ·         Describe some common pitfalls regarding test automation for control system. What can go wrong? What are warning signs to look for?
